Arsenal fans hoping to see a fully fit and firing squad heading into the new season have been handed a fresh concern, as defender Jurrien Timber has departed the club’s pre-season training base in Spain to return to London for assessment on a groin problem.
The Dutch international, who has had a frustrating relationship with injury since arriving at the Emirates, missed a chunk of the tail end of last season due to the same groin issue. So when news broke that he had been sent back to the capital rather than continuing preparations with his teammates under the Spanish sun, alarm bells naturally started ringing among the Arsenal faithful.
It’s worth noting, of course, that clubs often take a cautious approach with players during pre-season when any niggle flares up. The last thing Arsenal — or any side with serious ambitions — wants is to rush a player back too aggressively, only to see them break down completely once the competitive matches begin rolling in. Sending Timber home for proper evaluation is arguably the sensible and responsible move.
That said, the timing is far from ideal. Pre-season training camps are about building fitness, sharpening tactical understanding, and developing that all-important team chemistry. Every session missed is a step behind for a player who was already playing catch-up after his end-of-season absence. For a defender of Timber’s quality and importance to Mikel Arteta’s system, consistency and rhythm matter enormously.
Since his move to North London, the 23-year-old has shown undeniable class whenever he has been available, demonstrating the kind of versatility and technical ability that made Arsenal fork out a significant fee to bring him in. When fit, he genuinely looks like a cornerstone of this squad for years to come. The challenge has simply been keeping him on the pitch long enough to truly establish himself.
Arsenal will be hoping this latest setback is nothing more than a precautionary measure and that Timber will be back in training sooner rather than later. With the Premier League season edging ever closer, the club will want all their key players available and sharp from the very first whistle.
For now, supporters will simply have to wait for further updates — and keep their fingers firmly crossed that this groin concern doesn’t turn into something more serious.
