The experiment centers around a surprisingly old concept borrowed from architecture and building design: the chimney effect, also known as the “stack effect.” The basic idea is that hot air naturally rises, and if you give it a tall, narrow channel to travel through, it moves faster and more efficiently, carrying heat away more effectively. Buildings have used this principle for ventilation for centuries. Der8auer just decided to slap it onto a gaming PC.
Using a modular 3D-printed tower stretching an impressive 110 centimeters tall — yes, that’s over a meter of plastic tube sitting on a desktop — he managed to drop the CPU temperature of an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D by a stunning 19 degrees Celsius, entirely passively. No fans, no liquid cooling loops, no exotic materials. Just physics doing what physics does best.
The design works by sitting the tall chimney structure directly over the CPU heatsink. As the processor generates heat, warm air rises up through the elongated tower, creating a continuous airflow draft that draws cooler air in from the bottom.
